Missing teeth in adulthood can be an inconvenience – no longer will a new tooth emerge to replace the one that is missing. In order to regain a complete set of teeth and aesthetically pleasing smile, you may be interested in wearing dentures or having dental implants placed. Based on your oral health and preference, the most appropriate treatment will be used.
What are dentures?
Typically, those who have unhealthy or weak gums and bone are more suitable for dentures. These are removable artificial teeth that can replace multiple teeth. Dentures must be secured with an adhesive, though it is possible that they may fall or shift when eating and/or speaking. This can often cause embarrassment and frustration. Additionally, if the dentures have not been fitted properly they may cause further damage to the surrounding teeth and/or gums as they move. Patients may require additional fillings or even need to have more teeth replaced with a larger denture. Alternatively, dental implants may be an ideal option for those who have healthy gums and bone.
A dental implant can replace one tooth individually or multiple teeth based on the number of teeth missing. Dental implants are surgically implanted into the jawbone as an artificial tooth root. It will hold a replacement tooth that is made to match the surrounding teeth and provide a natural appearance. If there are multiple teeth missing, two or three dental implants can be used to hold a permanent denture. This reduces the risk of further damage to the surrounding teeth and gums.
